I am pretty sure that the phrase “summer camp” is not found anywhere in the Bible. Wait a minute. Let me check in my electronic Bible (pause)… Nope, just as I suspected: there is no mention of summer camp anywhere in the Scriptures. However, I believe that the Christian summer camp experience is one of the most Biblical ways a person can spend a week of his or her life. Think about it for a second. At camp you are removed from technological distractions, work distractions, relationship distractions, hobby distractions, and so on. At the very same time you immerse yourself for one whole week into things like personal quiet time with God, reading the Bible, listening to expositional sermons, singing praises to God, talking and praying in small groups, meeting new friends, serving people. That sounds a lot like a week of “exercising yourself toward godliness” (1 Timothy 4:7) in the context of intense spiritual fellowship. I believe we all need time away from our daily and weekly routine to recalibrate our walk with God. Even Jesus Himself is famous for getting alone to spend time with His Father in prayer and meditation. Because camp is so important, I am driving some high school students to camp in North Carolina today. We want to experience spiritual refreshment and invigorating fellowship. Please be in prayer for us as we seek the Lord together.
